A renowned club disc jockey (DJ) was found dead two days after he posted his suicide plan on twitter, sending a shock wave through the online community. This is the first time a person in Korea has committed suicide after posting a prior notice on the popular social network service (SNS).

According to police, a 27-year-old Lee, who worked as a DJ at discotheques in northern Seoul, left a message on his twitter page, Sunday, saying “I am going to commit suicide. To all of you, even those who shared the slightest friendship with me, I love you.”

His twitter followers, who received regular messages from him, searched for his whereabouts but failed. A passer-by found him hanging at the ferry dock on the Han River in Seoul, Tuesday morning.

Lee reportedly left some separate suicide notes for his family members and workmates, complaining of financial difficulties.

This is the first time twitter or any kind of SNS has been used as a tool for suicide notification, although there have been several cases of online community bulletins being used for such a purpose in the past.

Lee’s twitter was mostly filled with happy messages and puns with pictures of him smiling posted all over. However, two days before he left the suicidal message, he posted, “The depression has become massive for me.”

Twitter followers are distributing Lee’s personal information and pictures with news of his death, expressing shock and paying condolences.

“Twitter has become one of the most influential communication tools of our time. But maybe, the depth of the friendship it provides wasn’t deep enough to save the DJ from death,” twitter user Zepiros15 said.




트위터, 첫 예고 자살 계획

유명한 클럽 DJ가 자신의 트위터에 자살 계획을 올린 이틀 뒤 숨진 채 발견돼 충격을 줬다.

경찰에 따르면 서울 클럽의 DJ 였던 이씨(27)는 “저는 자살을 할 것입니다. 저랑 잠시라도 인연이 있었던 분들 모두 사랑합니다”고 일요일 자신의 트위터에 올렸다.

그의 트위터 팬들은 그의 소재를 파악해 보려 했지만 실패했다. 화요일 아침 한강에서 목매달아 자살한 이씨를 지나가는 사람이 찾았다.

이씨는 평소 재정적인 문제 때문에 부모님과 직장동료들에게 자살노트를 남겼었다.

이번 사건은 한국에서 처음으로 자살계획을 인터넷 네트워킹에 올리고 자살한 경우다. 이씨의 트위터는 행복하고 웃고 있는 이씨의 사진들과 댓글들로 넘쳤었다. 하지만 자살하기 이틀 전 우울증이 너무 커졌다고 올렸다.

트위터 이용자 Zeprios15은 “트위터는 현시대에 가장 영향력 있는 것 중 하나가 됐다. 하지만 트위터상 인간관계는 DJ의 목숨을 구할 만큼 깊지는 않은 것 같다” 고 말했다
