How to Stay Healthy in College

The college years are ones we look back on fondly, but aren't often our healthiest years. Take a few simple steps to staying (relatively!) healthy in college.

Eat Healthy

Eating healthy meals is important - not only to keep you feeling great and keep weight-gain at bay, but also to allow room for pizza on the weekends every now and then! Fill half your plates with vegetables and fruit (mostly vegetables!), a quarter with protein and another quarter for starchy vegetables or whole grains.

Choose Nutritious Snacks

Late night studying sessions are often fueled with snacks - and not healthy ones. Choose nutritious snacks like nuts (portioned out, they are calorie-dense), cheese and whole-grain crackers, smoothies or vegetables with hummus.

Drink Less

For most, part of college is about drinking and while it would be hypocritical to say not to drink at all, it's probably a good idea to drink less. And if you are going to drink, do so safely. Drinking is the main reason for weight gain and bad decisions.

Stay Active

Working out (or simply moving your body) is very important in college, especially since most universities offer free recreation center membership. It helps relieve stress, keeps you from gaining weight and can be a great way to bond with new friends.

Get Enough Sleep

No more all-nighters before exams! Sleep is vital for health, stress levels and general well-being. Make sure you're getting decent nights sleep - on a VERY regular basis!

Watch for Stressfondly

Balancing life on your own isn't always easy, and managing stress can be an important lesson to learn in college. Take time for yourself and determine what (phone calls with friends, yoga, walks, etc.) helps to relieve your stress.
