You Call That Real Work? The World’s Weirdest and Coolest Jobs

In a perfect example of demand and supply, a restaurant in Shanghai is providing a unique service for diners who wish to continue using their phones while eating crayfish.

“Professional crayfish peelers” will sit with customers and peel their crustaceans, while the mostly male clientele stay on their devices to play games or chat on social media.

One of the two peelers employed by the restaurant claims she earns more than 10,000 yuan (US$1550) a month.

If that doesn’t sound like an a-peeling prospect, check out these other unconventional jobs.

1. Visitor Services Manager at St Michael’s Mount
The job involves overseeing 30 seasonal employees and ensuring that visitors have a good time while visiting St Michael’s Mount, an island off the coast of Cornwall, England, that boasts a medieval castle and several historical buildings.

You’ll get an annual salary of between US$34,000 and US$41,000 and get to stay rent-free on the island that has only 30 fulltime residents.

However, you will be plenty busy as the island sees some 350,000 tourists a year.

2. Travelling the World Posting About Luxury Homes
One lucky person got to travel the world for three months and stay in 12 luxury homes after winning a “Best job on the planet” contest by home-rental site, Thirdhome.

All she had to do was post pictures and videos of the homes on social media.

Locations included Scotland, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic.

The gig was even a paid one, to the tune of US$10,000 a month plus a travel allowance.

If this is not the best job on the planet, it definitely comes close.

3. Netflix Tagger
If you spend a lot of time watching TV, this might be the perfect job for you.

Netflix taggers have to watch between three and eight titles a week then tag them with relevant metadata, for example, year of release, language and cast list.

Taggers also have to classify the content in a more subjective manner, such as the tone and spirit of the show.

The information is then used to come up with recommendations on what to watch.

It appears this job will allow you to Netflix, but not chill.

4. Master Lego Model Builder
Believe it or not, this is a job and one that you can get paid actual money for doing.

A Master Model Builder is employed in every one of Lego's Legoland Discovery Centres around the world.

In March 2018 the Legoland Discovery Centre in Birmingham in the UK put out the call to employ a Master Model Builder.

Over 5,000 applications were received and the final 50 battle against each other in a live public feat of Lego building.

Only 22 similar positions exist within the company around the world.
